Il Dipartimento di Psicologia dei Processi di Sviluppo e Socializzazione organizza il seminario "The long-term effects of same-sex parenting on child adjustment: international perspectives", a cura del Prof. Henny Bos, Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, University of Amsterdam (NL).

Abstract:
In the current talk I will present studies investigating the psychological well-being ofchildren born to same-sex parents, with a particular focus on the National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS) – the unique and ground-breaking investigation worldwide which I conduced with Nanette Gartrell following US lesbian mother families since the mothers were pregnant until their children were 25 years old. I will also discuss my most recent research on a population-based comparison of female and male same-sex parent and different-sex parent households in the Netherlands. Studying same-sex parent families might help tease apart the relative influences of gender, genetic connections and minority status on child-rearing and child development. These studies could benefit from including measures of resilience, as well as assessments of how parents deal with and prepare their offspring for the prospect of homophobic discrimination. In this vein, to conclude I will address some remarks for practitioners and mental health professionals who work with same-sex families.
